Life Tree Pharmacy is the community pharmacy. It seeks to promote health and understanding in all the communities it serves. The next phase for Life Tree is going to be outreach programs with the leaders of local communities. “For some people, they can’t come out to get their needs [met], so they have to be reached,” says pharmacist Benjamin Ezekiel. “There are no restricted areas for us,” he continues, commentating on his time at a corporate pharmacy where he felt strangulated and boxed in. Life Tree seeks to reach all corners of Milwaukee to promote their health and wellness. Ezekiel has already found success in his early efforts with communities, feeling excited to continue and warmly welcomed. “We are here to serve, and they like that.”
With Life Tree Pharmacy, we have a passion to go into the community, not just in the four walls of the pharmacy. We are trying to work with the community groups: some outreach, to get a better feel of the community, and to see what we can do. – Benjamin Ezekiel, pharmacist at Life Tree “ ”
“We started to build those healthy relationships. We are looking forward to building a community of healthy people through the service that we provide.”
A FOUNDATION OF CARE Benjamin Ezekiel, a Nigerian born pharmacist, is seeking to make your health, his priority. He practiced his craft in Nigeria for many years until he came to the United States. Here, Ezekiel studied diligently for six years, taking his equivalency exams and becoming a registered pharmacist in 2006. Ezekiel worked as a staff pharmacist at a larger company for four years, and as a pharmacy manager for six. “Most of my work [there] was around the inner city of Milwaukee. I discovered that I have this passion to interact with my clients: trying to know what is going on with them, solve their needs, and open up windows so they can talk to me.” However, working with corporate America, he found that he was not given any room for his passion. Ezekiel found that his personal touch did not fit at the corporation he was employed at. Ezekiel started looking for an institution where he could practice the way he wanted to practice. This is where Life Tree Pharmacy sprouted in Ezekiel’s mind. “We have this motto or logo that says, ‘Life Tree Pharmacy: your health is our priority.’ And, we are trying to build healthy relationships through service.” The opportunity came to fruition in November 2017 and opened the location on Appleton Avenue. “What I bring to the table is I don’t deal with people as numbers. I don’t deal with them just as clients. They are people that I see [I have] a relationship to, so I am committed to taking care of them [personally]”. Life Tree Pharmacy helps with introductions to doctors, following up with their clients, and making sure vitals are all in the right place. Continuous access to Ezekiel, the pharmacist at Life Tree, is available to his patients. Offering a free prescription delivery to any part of Milwaukee is one
of Ezekiel’s ways of caring for all his patients, especially the elderly. Drug consultations; the ability to work with all insurances and those not insured; and providing the best discount prices available are how Ezekiel continues to help the community where he works.
FREE PRESCRIPTION DELIVERY>> To help those who may not be able to safely get to Life Tree’s storefront, Ezekiel offers free delivery of prescriptions to anywhere in Milwaukee. An option is available when Life Tree signs off patients, indicating if one requires the service. With automatic refills, Ezekiel contacts the patients to see when they want them delivered and at what time, so the prescription safely gets to the patients’ hands. This is one of many in-house services that Life Tree offers: done in-house to keep prescriptions secure and bills minimal. SERVING UNDER-INSURED CUSTOMERS>> Life Tree pharmacy has many tactics to get your medications at the cheapest rates possible. Not only negotiating with wholesalers, Life Tree has developed a discount card program that cuts out the middle man, delivering benefits to the pharmacy and patients. Other discount cards offered by companies are out to get money from the pharmacist and the patient. Life Tree’s discount card helps you and Ezekiel keep track of your benefits and medications. Ezekiel wants to help those who are under insured to be able to afford their necessary medications. Coupling this service with another, their free prescription delivery, Life Tree hopes to provide for their clients ease and peace of mind when they take their medications. Ezekiel finds that when he services several group homes that both services come in handy for his patients and their caretakers.
HEALTH SCREENING>> Diabetes, heart conditions, cholesterol problems, blood pressure, stroke, and age-related conditions all require additional thought and care for when medications are administrated. Life Tree offers additional medical screenings to monitor their patients. “When was the last time you got your shingle shots, flu shots, and ammonia, especially? Those are things that as people get older, on some medications, they are more prone to some of these diseases, so immunizations help to keep them healthy,” says Benjamin Ezekiel, pharmacist at Life Tree. Life Tree makes sure to follow-up with its patients, so they can get those immunizations in a timely manner. Life Tree is looking in the near future to expand its natural medications with herbs and vitamins. Life Tree is developing a line of natural products. It is still being finalized; however, with no current regulations by the government, Life Tree is taking its time to make the products the best they can be. “We want to be sure that we meet up to the standard that we know will be beneficial to them,” says Benjamin Ezekiel, pharmacist at Life Tree. Seeking those who are not satisfied with conventional medicines, Ezekiel hopes to bring these vitamins and herbs that can help their clients. Currently, Life Tree sells cosmetics, like Black Soap, developed by local companies. Lotions and other soaps are in their current oerings to help with eczema, acne, and dry and blemished skin. With no need of prescription for these products, Life Tree is excited to acquire more natural cures for their clients.
“As patients take specific medicines, there are vital signs that [a pharmacist] wants to watch out for and want to encourage them to be cognizant of, so if something is going wrong, we [have] a system to pick it up.” – Benjamin Ezekiel, pharmacist at Life Tree.
